PAST ACTIVITIES IN 2005:
(In chronological order, starting from the most recent)

East met West in Renaissance Venice, especially in
the work of Gentile Bellini. One of the city’s most prestigious
artists, he was sent to Istanbul in 1479 to work for the Ottoman sultan,
Mehmed II (Fatih Sultan Mehmed). All of Bellini’s surviving work done
in Istanbul are being presented in the exhibition. The artist depicted
Byzantine and eastern Mediterranean subjects such as Cardinal Bessarion
and Caterina Cornaro, queen of Cyprus. While exploring Western
fascination with the East—and vice versa—Gentile Bellini and the
East provides a new context for examining the art of Renaissance Venice. |

October 29 - November 30, 2005 Boston Turkish Festival was organized in 1996 for the first time and has taken place every year ever since. The uniqueness of the BTF is that it is the first month-long Turkish festival in the United States reflecting various dimensions of Turkish arts and culture. Purpose of the Festival is to support talented artists and musicians in the region, and also to play the role of a cultural bridge between two countries, as well as other communities in the New England area and beyond for a better and enlightened mutual understanding and to explore each other's culture. |
