August 24-30, 2006

Co-presented with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul by Fatih Akin (Germany/Turkey, 35mm, 2005, 92 min.). This documentary from the director of Head On takes us on a journey through the music scene in modern Istanbul. Our guide is Alexander Hacke (member of Einstürzende Neubauten), who sets up his mobile recording studio to capture everything from classical Arabesque to indie rock and rap. Among the featured artists are the hugely popular Sezen Aksu and Orhan Gencebay, alongside newer bands such as Duman and Replikas. This is a beautifully paced portrait of the city’s cultural life. In English, German, and Turkish with English subtitles.

www.BostonTurkishFilmFestival.org

This year's thirteen-program festival has continued its tradition of highlighting emerging Turkish filmmakers with a recurring theme that hits on diverse lifestyles in Istanbul, one of the most breathtaking cities in the world. It's been a rare opportunity to glimpse the best contemporary work of Turkish cinema from the new generation of filmmakers such as Semih Kaplanoglu, Umit Unal, Kutlug Ataman, Ugur Yucel, Ahmet Ulucay and Cagan Irmak, as well as veterans like Yavuz Turgul. The festival has also featured three concerts by world-class musicians, the Fahir Atakoglu Trio, the Omer Faruk Tekbilek Ensemble,  and the Derya Turkan and Sokratis Sinopoulos Ensemble.

Exhibition: GENTILE BELLINI AND THE EAST

December 14, 2005 - March 26, 2006
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

East met West in Renaissance Venice, especially in the work of Gentile Bellini. One of the city’s most prestigious artists, he was sent to Istanbul in 1479 to work for the Ottoman sultan, Mehmed II (Fatih Sultan Mehmed). All of Bellini’s surviving work done in Istanbul are being presented in the exhibition. The artist depicted Byzantine and eastern Mediterranean subjects such as Cardinal Bessarion and Caterina Cornaro, queen of Cyprus. While exploring Western fascination with the East—and vice versa—Gentile Bellini and the East provides a new context for examining the art of Renaissance Venice.

TACS co-sponsored in part the opening event of the exhibit on December 15, 2005
